The Aesthetics of Saving (part 2): Workshop
Spacecraft recently had a consultant urge them to consider printing and making off shore. Rather than taking up this advice, the Melbourne-based studio restated their commitment to working within a local context. This year, spacecraft contributes to the Festival theme through an exhibition and workshop, illustrating the value it, and many others, place on understanding the local vernacular, craft movements, artists and designers.
Our environmental decisions start with the design process and one of the first considerations at Spacecraft is: How will this be produced? Designing on one side of the world and producing on the other can limit designers’ understanding of the processes involved in production and ultimately contributes to diminished responsibilities. In this case, change by design represents no change to supporting a viable making infrastructure in Victoria.
Spacecraft have invited three outstanding practitioners – Jonathan Keely, Jeannette Mayne and Adam Stewart – to develop ideas and work collectively to create new work at the studio. In order to continue a conversation with previous events, they have chosen abandoned furniture, collected on the streets, as the material and subject for the project. The end result will be an exhibition of the new work.
To further expand on the themes and utilise this formidable project cast, there will also be a special practical workshop at the studio in North Melbourne. Come along and meet, and learn from, some of the key people behind Spacecraft.
