Design For Everyone
Character 6 - Typeface
In 2007 Character organised the screening of the international hit Helvetica at ACMI, attracting over 500 people. Building on this event, Character continues to screen films about type, design and the social connections that lie between these fields and the broader community.
The screening of Typeface for the 2010 State of Design Festival is part of this important ongoing dialogue. Typeface focuses on a rural Midwestern museum and print shop where international artists meet retired craftsmen and together navigate the convergence of modern design and traditional technique.
This is a pertinent issue in the field of graphic design where concerns of the fading craft are very present. Typeface will appeal not just to people within the design industry but those who have an interest in the social and cultural importance of printing, the maintenance of manual skills and the creative outcomes of this kind of work. The 'slow print' movement is akin to that of a 'slow food' culture that encourages the careful and considered use of materials in smaller, more digestible quantities.
The 4pm session has booked out. A second screening has been announced which will begin at 9.30pm. Please note the 9.30pm session is a screening only. Places limited – book early.
Presented by the RMIT Communication Design Program, Letterbox, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA)
