Design Made Trade

cloth fabric
Designer Julie Paterson and her team focus on creating distinctively earthy fabric collections and products with a bold, organic style using Julie’s drawings and paintings of the Australian landscape as inspiration. They like to work primarily with industrial hemp, linen, organic cotton and jute. But hemp is the real fabric of choice.
cloth have been using hemp for 15 years because of its unique properties and sustainable nature. It is very strong and durable, has great thermal qualities, is anti bacterial and inherently mould resistant. Producing in a sustainable, ethical manner is an important part of our business. cloth have always produced locally by hand because it means we can make in short batches, maintain quality and have a controlled and sensitive approach to materials and manufacture. They make only what we need. cloth's dyer dyes by the roll, our printer screenprints on 25 metre tables and our makers make one thing at a time. They have worked with the same people for the past 15 years and have built strong working relationships with them. And by working with low tech, old school processes, cloth's fabrics develop a soul that cannot be created by any fancy machines.
In addition to producing fabric, products, rugs, wallpaper and artwork, they particularly enjoy working collaboratively on custom projects with others. Whether the job is furnishing international boutique hotels or recolouring an existing design to a client’s colour palette, we love the interaction and process involved in getting our designs out into the world.
